According to wholevehicles, Vanuatu is an archipelago of 83 islands located in the South Pacific Ocean, roughly 1,750 km east of northern Australia. It is part of the Melanesian subregion and its capital is Port Vila, located on the main island of Efate. The majority of the population live on four main islands: Espiritu Santo, Malakula, Tanna and Erromango. The highest point in Vanuatu is Mount Tabwemasana at 1879 meters which is located on the island of Espiritu Santo.┬áThe islands are volcanic in origin and many have active volcanoes which contribute to their rugged landscape. The climate is tropical with hot summers and cooler winters. Rainfall varies from island to island but generally ranges from 2200 to 4000 mm annually with most rainfall occurring between December and March. The terrain also varies greatly between the different islands ranging from steep mountains to rolling hills and flat plains with some areas covered by dense rainforest. The coastal areas are fringed with coral reefs making them ideal for fishing, snorkeling and diving activities. Coconut palms are abundant along the coastlines providing a lush tropical feel to many areas.┬áVanuatu’s economy relies heavily on agriculture with copra (dried coconut) being one of its main exports alongside fishing, forestry and tourism. Most people live in rural villages and rely heavily on subsistence farming for their livelihoods growing crops such as taro, yams, bananas and kava root as well as raising livestock such as pigs and chickens. Fishing is also an important part of life for many people living near coastal areas with tuna being one of the main catches alongside mackerels, trevallys, snappers and groupers which can be found in abundance around Vanuatu’s waters.
