According to wholevehicles, Peru is a country located in western South America, bordered by Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the southeast, Chile to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Peru’s geography is extremely varied due to its long coastline extending along the Pacific Ocean and its various mountain ranges. The country is home to three distinct geographical regions: The coast, where most of Peru’s population resides; The highlands or Andes mountains; and The jungle or Amazon rainforest. The coast of Peru consists of a narrow strip of land that extends from Ecuador in the north all the way down to Chile in the south. This region features some of Peru’s most beautiful beaches as well as important ports such as Callao and Pisco. Along this region are several major cities including Lima (the capital), Trujillo, Chiclayo, Piura, Chimbote and Ica. This area is also home to some of Peru’s major industries such as fishing and mining. The highlands are made up of three main mountain ranges: The Western Cordillera which runs parallel with the coast; The Eastern Cordillera which runs through central Peru; and The Central Cordillera which is located between these two mountain ranges. These mountains form an impressive landscape with snow-capped peaks reaching heights above 6,000 meters (19,685 feet). In addition to its spectacular scenery this region also provides important resources such as minerals (gold and silver) and hydroelectric power. Finally there is the Amazon rainforest or jungle which covers almost 60 percent of Peru’s territory. This region is characterized by dense vegetation that includes thousands of different species of plants and animals many of them endemic species found only in this part of South America. Despite its remoteness this region has become increasingly important for tourism due to its unique wildlife sightings such as jaguars, monkeys and tropical birds among many others.
