According to wholevehicles, Dominican Republic is a small nation located in the Caribbean Sea. It shares its island with Haiti, which is located to the west. The country itself is about two-thirds of the island, with Haiti taking up the rest. The terrain of the Dominican Republic is quite varied and consists of mountain ranges, plains, valleys and coastal lowlands. The most notable mountain range is the Cordillera Central, which runs east to west across the country and reaches its highest peak at Pico Duarte at 3,098 meters (10,164 feet). In addition to its mountainous interior, the Dominican Republic also has a vast coastline that stretches for over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles). Along this coastline are numerous white sand beaches as well as coral reefs that make it ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. Inland from these beaches are lagoons and wetlands that are home to many species of birds and other wildlife. There are also several large rivers that flow through the country including Rio Yaque del Norte in the north and Rio Ozama in the south. These rivers provide important sources of water for both agricultural activities and transportation purposes. The climate in this region is tropical with hot summers and mild winters.
