According to wholevehicles, Chile is a long and narrow country located along the western coast of South America. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru to the east. Chile stretches over 4,300 km (2,700 mi) from north to south and has an average width of only 180 km (110 mi). The terrain of Chile is mostly mountainous with several active volcanoes in the Andes Mountains. The highest peak is Ojos del Salado at 6,893 m (22,615 ft). The Atacama Desert covers much of northern Chile while Patagonia covers most of southern Chile. In between lies Central Chile which consists of a series of valleys and rolling hills that are heavily populated due to its mild climate. Central Chile also contains some large lakes such as Lago Ranco and Lago Villarrica. Along the Pacific coast are numerous islands including Chiloé Island which is known for its traditional wooden architecture. Chile’s climate varies greatly depending on location with desert conditions in the north and a cool temperate climate in the south. In Central Chile temperatures range from mild summers to cold winters with snowfall in some areas such as Santiago. The central part of the country experiences moderate rainfall throughout most of the year while northern Chile has very little precipitation due to its proximity to the Atacama Desert. To the south there are abundant rains during winter months creating an ideal environment for forests and grasslands that cover much of Patagonia’s landscape. Overall, due to its varied geography and climatic conditions, Chile offers many different landscapes ranging from arid deserts in the north to lush temperate rainforests in the south making it one of South America’s most geographically diverse countries.
