It is bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west and Iran to the south. Azerbaijan’s terrain is mostly flat and low-lying with its highest point being 4,485 meters above sea level. The Greater Caucasus Mountain Range extends along the northern border of Azerbaijan providing a natural barrier between it and Russia. The Lesser Caucasus Mountains run through the center of Azerbaijan from west to east while its major rivers include Kura River and Aras River which form a natural border between Azerbaijan and Iran. The country’s climate varies from subtropical in its southern areas near the Caspian Sea to cold semi-arid in its central areas near Baku. Its coastal areas experience mild winters with temperatures rarely dropping below zero degrees Celsius while further inland temperatures can drop below -10 degrees Celsius during winter months. Azerbaijan has a rich biodiversity with over 3,700 species of plants that are found within its borders as well as numerous species of animals such as wolves, bears, deer, boars and foxes that can be found in its forests or mountain ranges. It also has several protected areas such as National Parks (Gobustan Reserve) Wildlife Refuges (Gizilagaj Reserve) and Nature Reserves (Hirkan National Park). Overall, Azerbaijan’s geography is diverse with mountains in its north and south regions; flatlands in between; rivers running through much of it; lush forests covering parts; wetlands providing habitat for birds; deserts stretching across some parts; islands off its coast; lakes dotting some regions; hot summers followed by cold winters; vast biodiversity throughout it all making it an interesting destination for tourists all around!
