Yerevan has a population of over one million people and is known for its unique architecture combining traditional Armenian styles with modern elements. Other major cities include Gyumri which lies in northwestern Armenia near the Turkish border and Vanadzor which lies on the banks of river Debed in northern Armenia near Georgia.
